WINDING & UNWINDING SYSTEMS

Surface Driven Winders

Consistent Winding Pressure. Superior Roll Formation. Every Time.

Menzel’s Surface Driven Winders are engineered to deliver exceptional roll quality, consistent tension control, and reliable performance across a wide range of materials—from delicate knits to heavy industrial webs. Whether powered by hydraulic or electric systems, each winder is designed to eliminate entrapped air, prevent telescoping, and produce straight, crease free rolls at high speeds.

These systems include multiple configurations— A Frame Surface Winders, Two Roll Surface Winders, and Low Profile Surface Winders—all built on Menzel’s legacy of precision engineering and international manufacturing standards.

Surface Driven Winders

A-Frame Surface Winders

Menzel’s A‑Frame Surface Winders are engineered for applications where adaptability, mobility, and consistent winding pressure are essential. Built for materials that are traditionally difficult to wind—such as knits, technical textiles, and delicate webs—these systems use a surface‑driven “lay‑on” roll to eliminate trapped air, prevent telescoping, and produce uniform, stable rolls every time.

A‑Frame winders are available in Electric and Hydraulic configurations, allowing manufacturers to match the drive technology to their material, roll size, and production environment.

Two‑Roll Surface Winders

Two Roll Surface Winders are a type of surface driven winder, but with a different mechanical approach. Instead of a single lay on roll, they use two driven rolls with a speed differential to create tight, uniform packages.

This design is ideal for:

  • High speed finishing lines
  • Straight, crease free rolls
  • Applications requiring consistent roll density across varying materials

Standard Features

  • Heavy steel side plates with rigid cross‑bracing
  • Sheet‑metal enclosures with hinged doors
  • Pair of surface winding rolls with speed differential
  • Adjustable tube guides

Optional Features

  • Operator platform with non‑slip walkboard
  • Photo‑electric edge guiding system
  • Pneumatic powered‑offing package
  • Adjustable speed drive
  • Pneumatic cross‑cut knife assembly
  • Polyband® Expander or bow roll
  • Oscillating roll
  • Multiple slitting assemblies (score, shear, razor, hot knife)

Low Profile Surface Winders

A heavier duty version designed for larger batch rolls and higher speeds, handling rolls up to 60″ in diameter with power doffing.

Standard Features

  • Formed carbon steel construction
  • Two rubber‑wrapped rolls with speed differential
  • Electrical control panel
  • Adjustable tube guides
  • Power doffing package
  • Pneumatic clutch on packing roll

Optional Features

  • Photo‑electric guiding system
  • Polyband® Expander or bow roll
  • Adjustable speed drive
  • Slitting assemblies
  • Oscillating roll

Menzel offers two primary drive technologies:

  • Hydraulic Surface‑Driven Winders
  • Electric Surface‑Driven Winders

Both achieve excellent roll quality, but each offers distinct advantages depending on material type, roll size, and production requirements.
